| How to Shop for a Website Hosting Company. |
 |
I interviewed Rick Bauman from ARBIS Internet
Solutions, Inc. With 20 years of experience as an
information tech; 6 years of experience working on the
internet; and getting his master's degree in e-business,
Rick offers some insight in what to look for in a
hosting company. He summed it up this way: "The two
major points to look for in web hosting are experience
and reliability."
· Price is important. Some hosting companies are way
overpriced. They often do persuasive cold calls
offering hosting and website development. Check them
out thoroughly before making the commitment.
· Get a recommendation. Ask friends who they are
using and if they are happy with their hosting
company. Also ask reputable, established website
designers who they recommend.

| When shopping for website hosting here are some questions to ask: |
 |
|
1. Technical support. Is there a phone number where
you can speak to a tech person who answers a phone?
Are they courteous or do they talk over your head?
Avoid hosting companies that you can only contact by
e-mail or who return phone calls two days later.
2. Server down time. Has their website ever been shut
down because the hosting company had problems with
their servers (these are the computers that hold your
website on the internet)? A quality hosting company
has a strong back-up system.
3. Do they offer virus protection on the server level?
Spam blockers are another form of protection. The
problem with it is that the company is choosing what
e-mails you will receive... not you.
4. How long has the hosting company been in
business? Who are some of their clients? There are
some reports of hosting companies taking the clients'
payments and "disappearing."

| Statistics Anyone? |
 |
|
OK, stats can be boring. But they can also give you
some important information. One of the services a
hosting company can offer is statistics... how did
people get to your website? When you are running an
internet ad, the stats will tell you how many people
clicked on the ad and came to your website. That way
you know if your ads are working... or if you should go
another direction.
